NEUROLOGY + STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
ACTIVATE YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM TO HEAL FASTER, GET FITTER, & PERFORM BETTER
The relationship between the nervous and musculoskeletal systems is the foundation of movement, fitness, and athletic performance. It's also the most neglected concept in training. Not any more.
THE ULTIMATE IN NEUROMUSCULAR
Combined with our protocols, the NEUBIE can find neurological deficits in the human body with incredible precision. As we all know, the nervous system controls every muscle movement. If a movement dysfunction is contributing to your pain, keeping you injured, limiting your mobility, or robbing you of performance, then our approach can help you.
A NEW PARADIGM IN ELECTRICAL STIMULATION
NEUBIE is a New Paradigm in Electrical Stimulation. Gone are the days of TENS and Interferential, applied passively while your patient is reading a magazine and used only to mask pain. Our proprietary device allows us to hack into the nervous system, improve movement patterns, accelerate healing, and boost patient outcomes to levels that sometimes seem like science fiction.
The details: NEUBIE is a revolution in the field. Because it is Direct Current (as opposed to Alternating Current) and because the wave form is engineered to most closely match the neurological signals that the body sends naturally on its own, the NEUBIE allows us to do a few unique things for the most advanced Neuromuscular Re-education.
(1) We can identify where there are flaws in how the nervous system is working to control movement.
(2) We can repattern the nervous system to improve function.
(3) We can accelerate the rate of healing in the body (DC does this, AC does not).
The NEUBIE is actually able to get DC into the body without the burning and stinging that would typically happen. It does this by adding a “background” waveform that is a microcurrent-like signal. This allows the DC current to penetrate through the skin with less resistance, so that the main pulse can get into the muscles and other tissues without that stinging or burning sensation on the skin.
HOW IS IT SO EFFECTIVE?
The NEUBIE wave form has two main benefits. (1) It provides direct current, and (2) it matches the signals the nervous system already sends naturally on its own.
Using Direct Current (DC) is important, because it has numerous, positive biological effects. DC fields will accelerate the body’s own physiological processes of healing, repair, and regeneration. Although this has been known for a long time, most devices out there are alternating current (AC). These devices are cheaper and easier to engineer, and most people don’t know the difference. Unfortunately, they won’t have anywhere near the effect at the cellular level.
The NEUBIE signal is also engineered to match the dynamics of the body’s own, internal signals. When the current is sent, it gets interpreted the same way as if actual movement is taking place. This allows us to identify exactly where there are any flaws in the neurological control of movement, and retrain them. We all know that proper movement can be very beneficial for the body. That movement always reaches the brain as electrical impulses, and we now have a way to send those same signals directly! And though it’s not a replacement for movement, it sure provides a nice boost to a movement practice.
There is one additional point on the issue of AC vs. DC. When turned up to a high enough level to make a difference, AC causes co-contraction. In other words, as the AC signal goes back and forth, it causes opposing muscles to fight against each other. This reinforces poor movement patterns - the very same ones that contribute to injury in the first place. Our DC current promotes eccentric contractions, which research is proving to be a major factor in effective rehabilitation.

What's the missing component in rehabilitation?
Most industry professionals don't correctly bridge the gap between rehab and return to play/perform. Athlete's and individuals are getting structural clearance for injuries and are being tested for things like mobility and range of motion is proof of a job well done.
The truth is that not enough attention is paid to the nervous system. If your musculoskeletal system is the hardware in your nervous system is the software, then we know your software tells your hardware what to do. Why then is half of this equation ignored in most rehab and training systems?
Whether you're rehabbing or not, you have to look at the communication between nervous and musculoskeletal systems.
At XIIAM., I use the NEUBIE in conjunction with my strength & conditioning protocols, health & nutrition, and sport science to take a truly holistic approach to training athletes and individuals.
Most athletic injuries happen because of poor neuromuscular control, meaning deficits in strength and coordination. The body encounters force in every moment, with every move it makes. And it is the job of the muscles to absorb that force and protect the rest of the body. If your muscles are working correctly, they can protect you from injury in most cases. We know that when muscles don't absorb force correctly that force is transferred to tendons, ligaments, cartilage, etc. and may cause damage to those tissues. Since those muscles are controlled by your nervous system, we know that ultimately these injuries come back to inappropriate neurological activation patterns. Using the NEUBIE, we can find exactly where these dysfunctional neurological patterns exist. And when we work at that level, we find that we improve function and accelerate the body’s natural healing, which usually allows the symptom to resolve itself much more quickly than with traditional therapy. In traditional rehab programs, athletes are often cleared based on their range of motion and status of the musculature but no attention is paid to how the nervous system is controlling the muscle. Details like rate coding, innervation, firing, and more are left unaddressed and athletes are left with compromised use of their fast twitch muscle fibers, fluidity of movement, and poor rate of force development (RFD). Not any more.
PAIN RELIEF/MOVEMENT RE-EDUCATION/ACTIVATION
With modern advances in science, we now know a lot more about pain than ever before. Pain is not actually experienced in the body, but in the brain. It is an active output signal from the brain, generated in response to perceived threat - not necessarily damage. And it is an attempt to make you change your behavior to move away from a threat. Sometimes it is a “1-to-1” correlation, and you are having pain because of a real injury. In that case, read more on our approach injury rehabilitation. However, sometimes pain lingers even after an injury has healed on its own or been surgically repaired. Or it happens for other reasons, independent of any actual injury or damage. In these cases, an advanced understanding of pain is necessary to help overcome it. Because pain is a neurological output, it can be affected by neurological inputs. As seen in the ‘Threat Bucket’ image, that threat can actually come in many forms. Several forms of threat can be addressed with a healthy lifestyle. Others, coming from inside the body, require a very targeted approach. If the brain cannot, for example, tell precisely where all parts of the body are in space, then it doesn’t know what to do next and feels threatened. This is a deficit in “proprioception,” and is one of the major targets of our work.
There are several approaches to building muscle, and they all come down to one basic premise: you have to deplete a muscle of it’s energy and cause break down of its structural proteins so that it will grow bigger as it replenishes its energy and rebuilds its structure. There are always two parts. First, stimulation and depletion. Second, recovery and growth. During the second phase, it is necessary to get enough raw materials in to replenish the energy (carbohydrates and fat) and structural building blocks (protein) that are necessary to grow. In the first phase, depletion, people have traditionally had to spend hours and hours in the gym to get growth. With our technology, we can intensify your workouts so much that you can get 2-3 hours worth of work in 20 minutes.
In conjunction with my comprehensive health & nutrition programs, training system, and targeted supplementation, the NEUBIE can create stronger neuromuscular contractions and up-regulate metabolic reactions as a response to stimuli/stress for more potency.
You already have inside of you tremendous speed, power, endurance, flexibility, and whatever else it is that you’re looking for in your training. The problem is that your brain is limiting you from expressing it. If you are capable of jumping 36”, but your brain only thinks you can safely land from 24”, guess how high you will jump. 24 inches. The brain’s NUMBER ONE priority is survival. Above all else, your brain wants to be sure you live to see tomorrow. That often means “putting on the brakes,” and limiting your performance to ensure that you don’t get injured and threaten survival. Many generations ago, an injury meant that you’d be unable to run away from a predator and would, literally, have your survival threatened. Performance is, of course, an output. Most training systems try to change output (“push harder,” “shift your weight to that side,” “reach your arm higher in your throwing motion”). However, we know that output is dependent on inputs. If we can change the inputs, the outputs will naturally improve. What does this actually mean? It means that strategic joint mobility drills, neurological stimulation with the NEUBIE, lots of eccentric movement with an emphasis on position, and amplifying your ability to psychologically engage can all cause outputs to improve. The net result is increased performance, and it often happens quicker than you’d think.
Triathletes and other long-distance participants are often obsessed with VO2 max. And it makes sense. VO2 max is a measure of how much energy the body can generate, and of course that energy is used as fuel to propel the body through all that mileage. There is another area that is often overlooked, however, and that is fuel efficiency. Ultimately, most seasoned endurance athletes cannot bring up their VO2 max levels much higher. They are already generating about as much energy as they’ll be able to. So the biggest factor becomes how efficiently they are using all of that energy that they’re generating. Most athletes waste a large part of their energy fighting their own internal resistance. It’s just like driving while pressing both the accelerator and the brake at the same time. So, the biggest gains in performance often come from mastering neurological coordination, so that more of the body’s energy goes to forward propulsion and less to fighting against the body’s own brakes. How do we do this? Well, we start by first finding where those inefficiencies are. With the NEUBIE, we can identify very quickly and precisely where any deficits in coordination exist, and then we can reprogram them so that the body starts to work more efficiently, very quickly. Then after that “reboot,” we can continue to train the body to work more efficiently at higher and higher levels of challenge.
